Why “blue”?
The name Blue is a reference to the history of Swisscom. In fact, the company entered the Internet business under the brand name “The Blue Window”, which later became “Bluewin”. To date, Bluewin has not only been an email service, but also a news portal.
- In 1994, the then Telecom PTT and a Swiss electronics company (which no longer exists) developed “first visions of an Internet-like portal.”
- In 1996 “The Blue Window” was founded as a cooperation between the two companies. According to Wikipedia, it was the first Swiss provider where customers could call at the local rate.
- In 1999 a “free Internet” (highway) was launched. Customers no longer had to pay a basic monthly fee for Internet access, only telephone charges for the modem connection.
- In 2000 ADSL (Broadway) was launched. That same year, the company was renamed Bluewin AG.
- In 2002, Swisscom acquired 100% of Bluewin AG and dissolved it as an independent company in 2005.
- In 2006, the Bluewin TV television service was launched for ADSL clients through the telephone network.
- In 2009, Bluewin TV will be operated under the product name Swisscom TV.
