French Open first round – upset Medvedev leaves Fucsovics dup – sport

Daniil Medvedev, seeded number 4, has to surrender at the French Open in Paris after the exit round. He was defeated by Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (ATP 63) in 3:17 hours with 4: 6, 6: 7 (3: 7), 6: 2, 1: 6. The game did not end until well after 11 pm

The game was competitive, but Fucsovics, who was strong defensively, generally had the advantage on the important points. Overall, he only managed 10 points more than his opponent. On the other hand, Medvedev acted extremely error-prone. 51 unforced errors were compared with only 27 winners. For Fucsovics, 28, it’s the first win against a top-10 player.

Medvedev does the “enfant terrible” again

Medvedev reacted sometimes annoyed, messed with the referee and commented aloud on several lost points. A small excerpt:

• In a net duel, he aimed directly at Fucsovics’ body from close range. To then succinctly explain: ‘I just wanted to win the point, man. Sorry. “
• He fended off a break ball against himself in the first set with a serve from below.
• In the second round, Fucsovics scored 6: 3 in the tie-break after Medvedev’s mistake. The Russian broke his racket and received a penalty point, ending the sentence.

For Medvedev, it is the fourth consecutive opening loss at Roland Garros. After the match, tennis expert and legend Mats Wilander said: “What sets Medvedev apart from the greats: he lacks the absolute will to win.”

For Fucsovics, however, the tournament continues. In the second round, the Hungarian faces Spanish clay specialist Albert Ramos-Viñolas.
