Once again, a hospital tries to make itself heard through social media. The situation at the Cantonal Hospital in Freiburg is very serious. In a wake-up call on Twitter, Chief Medical Officer Nicolas Blondel appeals to the population.
What he says is alarming: “An ambulance arrives at the hospital every quarter of an hour.” 185 patients with Covid-19 would currently be in the cantonal hospital. “And if it continues like this, we will probably run out of space on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday,” Blondel said in Monday’s video. The canton of Friborg is “on the brink of a health catastrophe.”
“We have patients who are much younger”
And it doesn’t just affect older people: “We have patients who are much younger, some of them are even under 40,” says Blondel. If the situation does not improve, even young patients will not receive adequate treatment.
In mid-October, the Schwyz hospital released a similar cry for help. Director Franziska Föllmi chose clear words: “As a hospital, we can no longer handle this if the number of cases continues to increase.” The cry for help received a lot of attention.
Meanwhile, the number of cases has increased even more. Nicolas Bondel suspects that the reason for this is the popular festivals in Freiburg: “The patients are mainly from Freiburg who celebrated the Benichon (” Chilbi “) or the Recrotzon”, says Bondel about “La Liberté”. Several families gather and eat together at traditional festivals.
The blockade in Freiburg could come
For this reason, Nicolás Bondel appeals to the population: “There will be no family or private celebrations in the coming weeks.” The obligation to wear a mask and hygiene regulations must also be strictly observed.
The Freiburg State Council has declared a state of emergency and wants to announce new measures to contain the corona virus before Wednesday. The canton of Friborg is sometimes the hardest hit by the pandemic. (SDA / hac)
