Thursday at 2 pm the nightmare suddenly ended. The doors of the Bowling Green “Hardee Correctional Institution” prison in Florida were opened for Robert DuBoise, 56.

It is an overwhelming sense of relief. I have prayed to God every day and I have waited for him.

He had been sentenced to life in prison in 1983 for the murder of a 19-year-old girl. It is said that he raped, beat and murdered her. DuBoise swore his innocence, to no avail. He has to stay behind bars for almost 40 years.

Until on Thursday lawyers from the Department of Verification of Convictions and the Innocence Project presented new evidence. The team had reviewed 3,500 pages of documents over months, found rape samples from the district doctor and had her DNA retested.

All of this evidence ruled out DuBoise’s involvement. Judge Christopher Nash ruled that DuBoise should be released immediately.

DuBoise told reporters that he does not hold a grudge against those responsible for this injustice. You don’t want to burden your heart with hatred or bitterness. Also, he now has a lot of modern things to learn, like how to use a computer, says the released Robert DuBoise.
