The canton of Bern is also taking drastic measures in the fight against the corona virus. The governing council approved a series of bans on Friday and decreed that some masks must also be worn outdoors.

In professional sports, like the canton of Valais, it only allows ghost games without spectators. So far, 1000 spectators have been allowed, as in other cantons. In some, even more are allowed.

The governing council also banned public and private events for more than 15 people and imposed a curfew on restaurants from 11 pm to 6 am Bars, clubs and discos, as well as public access facilities such as museums, cinemas , libraries and sports and fitness centers, must also close.

Trade shows and fairs are also prohibited. This affects the Suisse Caravan Salon in Bern, for example, which was still allowed to sell 7,000 tickets a day on Thursdays and Fridays.

Starting on Monday, a maximum of four people can sit at a table in the restaurant. Larger groups are allowed if everyone lives in the same household.

The new rules apply from Friday at midnight for the first four weeks. Events with family and friends, for which commitments have already been made, can still be held with more than 15 people during the weekend.

Urgent appeal

The government’s goal is to reduce contacts in the population in a specific way, said health director Pierre Alain Schnegg (SVP). Together with Chief Financial Officer Christoph Ammann (SP) and Chief Security Officer Philippe Müller (FDP), he made an urgent appeal to the people of Bern to support the new measures.

The record number of infections required drastic measures. Taking strict measures now is a better option than a second lockdown, which is very bad for the economy.

With a mask at the “fair”

The requirement to wear a mask is expanded. It will also be applied from Saturday in game rooms and covered areas of public access buildings, as said the director of security Müller (FDP). Upon request, Schnegg added that masks will also be required in markets starting Saturday. (sda)
