If Martina Navratilova has her way, Alexander Zverev still has to improve in the final phase of the tournament if the final advance works. “This is not how you win the majors,” the 18-time Grand Slam winner told the German after winning the quarterfinals against Coric. In fact, Zverev cannot fully convince in terms of the game and sometimes has problems with his serve.
And yet you never have to cover the entire distance on your way to the last four. Especially in his head, the 23-year-old seems to have gone one step further, rarely being disturbed at Flushing Meadows this year, not even by Navratilova’s prophecy: “I am not interested in your opinion at the moment.” It seems that the time has come for Zverev.

The Spanish is the big surprise among the semifinalists and something like the replacement for the disqualified Djokovic. Unlike opponent Zverev, Pablo Carreño Busta was already in the semifinals in New York, three years ago he was defeated there by South African Kevin Anderson. This year he can especially benefit in the round of 16 against Djokovic’s defection, even if the current world number 27 played long before the Serb was disqualified.
In the quarterfinals, he fought Denis Shapovalov in a five-sentence thriller, although he did not win a game in the fourth round. So giving up is never an option for Carreño Busta. However, he is the clear outsider against Zverev. A role that the 29-year-old likes.

Daniil Medvedev is the only player to have reached the semi-finals without losing a single set and has been on the field for less than ten hours so far. Numbers like the ones Roger Federer had to show in his prime. Especially against compatriot Andrey Rublev Medvedev shows a great performance, but the Russian usually leaves all his opponents desperate when it comes to the important points.
Last year he was only in the final and could only be stopped by Rafael Nadal. This year there is nothing stopping Medvedev, at least if the sportsbooks have their way. With Dominic Thiem, the biggest potential hurdle to date is undoubtedly waiting in the semi-finals.

The Austrian only has to give up one set to Marin Cilic until the semi-finals and never seems to be in serious danger. Thiem proves his class especially against the formally strong Auger-Aliassime and De Minaur, at the same time he can save energy thanks to the sovereign appearance.
Like his rival Medvedev, the 27-year-old also knows how to advance to the final of a major tournament: in 2018 and 2019, he only needs one victory to succeed in Paris. At Flushing Meadows, however, the 2018 quarter-finals are the best result – the decisive disadvantage in the Austria-Russia semi-finals?
