Four remaining findings: the Super Sunday analysis
What findings remain from the first voting weekend after the outbreak of the corona pandemic?
The left is a power (referendum)
The Green Liberals hit the jackpot, they were on the winning side in every roster. But it was also a happy day for the Greens and the Social Democrats. Sunday’s votes confirmed the postponements of political parties in the last federal elections a year ago.
The left launched three referenda with allied associations, won twice and only lost by a narrow margin in fighter jets. The left camp has shown its power in a referendum, and that will curb bourgeois arrogance. But: preventing is easier than creating. The latter requires solutions with a majority.
If the townspeople want, decide
Turnout was encouragingly high, over 59 percent. The five proposals evidently mobilized voters on the left better than those on the right. Cities, including midsize ones, have moved significantly to the left in recent years, making their mark on voting Sunday. The army is barely anchored there, as the vote on fighter jets shows.
The no to the initiative of limitation as confirmation of the bilateral route, paternity leave as a sign of socio-political openness and for more equality. Or no to the hunting law as an expression of greater protection of species and biodiversity. The failed hunting law gives a strong boost to environmental associations and ecological concerns. Farmers and bourgeois parties should take this into account when fighting for pesticide initiatives. Agriculture, roads and the army, that is something like the holy trinity of bourgeois politics. Today it seems a bit old-fashioned.
Corona has disturbed and changed its priorities
The adjusted result for the fighter aircraft template was particularly surprising. It was not expected that way. It is not easy to interpret the result. The strategy of the left worked to the extent that it did not lead to a discussion for or against the army. The GSoA, the group for a Switzerland without an army, politely held back. It was a strategically smart move.
On the side of the opponents, left-wing security politicians dominated, such as National Councilor Priska Seiler Graf (SP / ZH), who did not fundamentally reject the new fighter jets, but came out in favor of cheaper jets. That got caught. Security is an issue at the moment. Only in the last few months was it mainly a virus that caused uncertainty.
Fighting a pandemic also costs a lot of money. Switzerland has taken on a lot of debt in recent months, and therefore the priorities on where taxpayers’ money should be spent have obviously changed. The financial argument may also have played a role in the child deductions.
And what does that mean for the future?
More women and younger people went to the polls on Sunday, as they did in the fall 2019 elections. That tends to help the left camp and green liberals. Your stories fit the zeitgeist better and can mobilize more.
The group responsibility initiative will be voted on at the end of November. There, too, the impulse is in the proponents.
