The race:
ABB’s Formula E is full of energy again: the first race of the new season takes place in Saudi Arabia. The E-Prix in Diriyah, a suburb of Riyadh, will be the first night ghost in the seven-year history of Formula E.
Dutchman Nyck de Vries is wide awake at the premiere under supposedly weather-neutral lights. The young Mercedes is already in front in all practice sessions and easily wins the race.
Behind them, Edoardo Mortara creates a podium feel. The 34-year-old from Geneva is not actually one of the contenders for the title. But Mortara ranks second on the podium in Night Spook.
He makes his podium storm possible with a mega mid-race maneuver. Mortara outlasted two opponents with two deft changes on a fastball: former Sauber driver Pascal Wehrlein and Mitch Evans. Mortara: “Actually, I am too old for such actions… But somehow I passed on to both of them immediately. That was the key moment of the race! “
The podium:
1. Nyck de Vries (Ho), Mercedes
2. Edoardo Mortara (Sz), Venturi
3. Mitch Evans (Nz), Jaguar
The other Swiss:
Sébastien Buemi, 13th place: Unique starting position 17 for the former world champion. Buemi made up some places with overtaking maneuvers and failed opponents, but it wasn’t enough for the first World Cup points of the season.
Nico Müller, 21st: Even before the race, the Bernese experienced ups and downs and during practice he caused the first crash of the new season. But then in qualifying, Müller hums sensationally in fifth place, but the supposed super pole qualification is followed by shock. Müller and two other drivers will cancel the fastest lap as yellow flags have been flown. “A joke!”, Müller enrages afterwards. In the race, it starts from the pit lane. But of course the points are out of reach.
The World Cup booth:
Identical to the result of the race.
The next race:
The second E-Prix on the illuminated track will take place in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
