Papa Bouba Diop, 63 times Senegalese international, dies after a long illness at age 42.
The midfielder began his career in Switzerland more than 20 years ago. Via Vevey and Neuchâtel Xamax, he joined the Grasshoppers in 2001, with whom he was proclaimed champion that same year. Later he played in France, England and Greece.
In Senegal, Bouba Diop achieved hero status thanks to his winning goal in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup in Seoul against reigning world champions France. When they first participated in the World Cup, the Africans were only stopped in the quarterfinals.
Papa Bouba Diop suffered from the so-called Lou Gehrig syndrome, an incurable nervous disease.
