Repeated fish kills have occurred in Blausee for two years. At 11 a.m., Stefan Linder, executive director of the Swiss Economic Forum, André Lüthi, executive director of the Globetrotter Group, and Philipp Hildebrand, former president of the National Bank, personally inform the known lake owners about the dead fish.
They believe they know the cause of death: “Suspicions of illicit activities and illegal dumping.” Because instead of crystal blue, the water of the Blausee in the Bernese Oberland is always cloudy. Since spring 2018 there have been several major fish kills.
Thousands of trout swam on his stomach. Since then, 40 tons of organic fish have had to be removed. The value: two million francs. This is demonstrated by the investigations of SRF “Rundschau” and Tamedia. The water tests showed a higher concentration of heavy metals and carcinogenic toxins in the dead animals.
Toxic waste from the Lötschberg tunnel construction site is to blame
So is the water from the Blausee AG trout farm. The water advertised on the popular excursion destination’s website as “Blausee’s clean and mineral-rich mountain spring water of excellent quality.”
Stefan Linder is now accusing: Old contaminated and improperly disposed gravel, i.e. toxic waste, from the Lötschberg tunnel is to blame for the disaster. BLS has been renovating the road in the Lötschberg summit tunnel since August 2018.
Contaminated gravel ended up in the quarry
According to the investigation, the contaminated gravel was illegally processed and deposited in the Mitholz quarry on the Blausee. The Berne Water and Waste Bureau confirms this. Part of the gravel contains highly toxic substances and should be disposed of in a special landfill.
Lindner suspects that the substances leaked into groundwater from the Mitholz quarry. Then it is said that they contaminated the water of the Blausee.
Determined prosecutor
The companies BLS and Vigier have been commissioned for the Lötschberg tunnel construction project. However, the accusations are rejected. No pollutants entered the groundwater, so they were not to blame for the death of the fish in the Blausee.
The landfill was closed by the Office of Water and Waste, the incorrectly discarded material must be recovered by the Vigier company. The owners of the Blausee have filed a criminal complaint and the prosecutor is now investigating. (euc)
