The podium
- 1. Corinne Suter (SUI) 1: 44.62
- 2. Sofia Goggia (ITA) +0.11
- 3. Breezy Johnson (United States) +0.20
The winner of last season’s discipline had the perfect start to the new season of speed. Corinne Suter shows an impressive performance in the first of two downhill races at Val d’Isère and celebrates her third World Cup victory in the French Alps, her second downhill.
Although the 26-year-old from Schwyz occasionally deviated from the ideal line at the bottom of the course, Suter reached the finish line 11-hundredths of a second ahead of Sofia Goggia. Nor had the Italian made it before without making a mistake. The podium was completed by American Breezy Johnson, who had already made people sit up and notice during practice.
The other Swiss women
- 8. Lara Gut-Behrami +1.32
- 13. Priska Nufer +2.63

- 20. Jasmine Flury +2.10
- 29. Juliana Suter +2.61
- 31. Luana Flütsch +2.64

Lara Gut-Behrami crossed the finish line as the second best Swiss woman. Ticino skipped the big risk and showed a solid run that took it to eighth position. Priska Nufer can be completely satisfied. Obwalden’s wife achieved her third best downhill result with 13th place.
Schmidhofer with a fall of terror
A heavy fall from Nicole Schmidhofer caused the low light of the race. The Austrian lost control in the lower part of the route after jumping and ran towards the safety nets at full speed. The 31-year-old’s pace was so fast that she broke the net on her skis.
Then the race was interrupted for a long time. According to information from ORF Schmidhofer was fully conscious at all times. They had to take her on a sled. As of yet, nothing is known about the type and severity of the injury.
According to Schmidhofer, there were many other falls at exactly the same point. Among other things, the Swiss Joana Hählen ended up in the networks. Unlike Schmidhofer, Hehlen was able to give the go-ahead in a timely manner.
So it goes
Another descent is on the program in Val d’Isère in just 24 hours. On Sunday, the first women’s sprint weekend of the season will end with a Super-G.
After the races in France, the focus is again on technical women. In a week, the women’s ski entourage will visit Semmering, Austria, where a slalom and a giant slalom are scheduled.
