Walter Kilchenmann (68) has lived on Brunnwiesenstrasse in Zurich-Höngg since 1989. But on Sunday his home suddenly turns into hell! The culprit is Zigi from Kilchenmann. “I smoked. Shiny ashes fell on the paper,” he told BLICK. With devastating consequences.
Then he went downstairs, says the retired IT specialist. Sleep. “Meanwhile, it started to burn.”
The videos show hell on Brunnwiesenstrasse. The attic is on fire. Then Kilchenmann hears noise. “They broke the front door down.” Probably his salvation.
«I drove by accident»
In front of the entrance to the house are three people who want to help Kilchenmann out of the flames. A couple is a neighbor of Kilchenmann. But the two fail to break the front door.
The third is Patrick Rüegg (37), himself from Zurich-Höngg. It happens that the Brandhaus passes on Sunday. And help. Rüegg also tries to open the door. Only at the beginning. “I couldn’t do it. I almost wanted to give up.” So the neighbor and Rüegg try it together. Finally the door slows down!
“I leaned against the railing with my arms. Then I kicked the door with both feet. A couple of times, in full force. When the door opened, I let my arm drop to the rail. Now I have a small bruise, “says the rescuer.
Resident rescue is paramount
Then the three of them ran to the fire station. “I was not entirely comfortable with that. The fire crackled. And I didn’t know exactly where it was burning. But for them the only thing that counted was rescuing the resident.
Rescuers climb the stairs. On the first floor. “It smelled of smoke. The older man crouched in the corner of the apartment. He was confused. We told him to get out because he was on fire. I don’t know why he didn’t get out of there alone. We took him out.
The older man was not injured, reports Rüegg. “We take it by the hand and we take it out.” The four people leave the house together.
Kilchenmann resident: “It was spectacular”
From his point of view, resident Kilchenmann describes the moment when the neighbors and Rüegg came: “They came and told me it would be nice if I went out. Then I went out to look. It was spectacular to see it ».
Höngg’s hero takes his brave act for granted: “It is normal to help. It could have been dangerous for the older man due to the fumes.
