With the public confession of guilt last week, the activists again drew attention to the difficult situation in Hong Kong. On the other hand, the appearance should have reduced the guilt: Several years in prison were expected, now several months have passed for Joshua Wong and his comrade in arms.
Wong’s arrest does not bode well for the democracy movement. The government is cracking down on critics. Since the democracy movement regained momentum last year, numerous people have been charged and convicted of participating in protests. Many people in Hong Kong, not only activists, but also citizens concerned about the future of their city, no longer speak out politically out of fear.
Activists continue to emphasize that they do not want to give up. Democratic demands like universal suffrage will not be implemented in Hong Kong for the foreseeable future. And with the national security law, which has been in effect since July, the government is taking specific action against critics.
