The base could be the new Elektro-500
Fiat has been paying tribute to the 500 for years, and only recently has the company introduced an electric version on a completely new platform with the well-known retro design. It’s nice to watch, but all nostalgic Fiat fans spontaneously remember a little legend: the Fiat 126.
More than 4.7 million copies of the successor to the “Nuova 500” were made between 1972 and 2000. Especially in Poland, where the normal 500 is built today, the 126 has become a myth. As “Maluch” (dwarf) he mobilized the masses there.
From the beginning, Fiat built the maximum of 26 hp 126 in Bielsko-Biala in Poland, later in Tychy, and in 1979 production in Italy was stopped. But the “Bambino” is still a cult there too, also in the former Yugoslavia, where the 126 left the assembly line in Zastava.
So why not take advantage of the huge number of 126 fans and plan a new edition? The modern electric platform offers a perfect opportunity. VW is already demonstrating this and is showing identification. Buzz with the look of old Bulli and I.D. Buggy Concept how to do it. The constructions you want are possible on a single flexible platform.
Let’s take a closer look at the Fiat 500 Electric: it is a good 3.61 meters long, the batteries offer a capacity of 42 kWh, which is enough for a range of around 320 kilometers. Analogously to him, our graphic designer has considered what a Neo-126 could be like. And we can only say: The result looks wonderful. Simple enough, no frills, almost a Tesla for the city. However, the classic 126 is visible, for example, with the typical C-pillars.
The controversial and nervous objectivity of the Fiat 126 with its unadorned front would make a new electric edition look stunning. Fiat could also slim down the 126 Electric to keep a sufficient distance from the 500 Electric.
Take for example the VW e-Up: battery capacity of 32.3 kWh, more than 200 kilometers range and a price of around 20,000 euros. A nice and affordable electric car for the city would be ready. Fiat should think about it, after all, the more often the new electric rig produces, the more profitable it will be.
And we thought even more: in the event of a merger between Fiat and PSA, the possible successors of the Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1 could technically be coupled to the Neo-126. So Fatti coraggio, Fiat!
