Edelweiss airline is reacting to Corona: If you want, you can lock the adjacent seat free for a fixed price.
Since the end of September, the holiday airline Edelweiss has been making a new offer to its passengers. If you wish, you can also reserve the neighboring seat. He pays a fixed price of 59 francs on short-haul flights and 159 francs on long-haul flights. This means that the neighboring seat remains free during the flight and the distance to the person sitting next to it is greater.
The reason for this is the crown pandemic, says Edelweiss spokesman Andreas Meier: “We have discovered that in the crown situation there is a demand to be able to reserve a free intermediate seat.” And, obviously, there are enough vacant seats to be able to offer passengers this option.
Can Edelweiss pay twice for the seats?
What’s irritating about the new offering is that the neighbor in the left and right seat can reserve a vacant middle seat at the same time. Edelweiss, for example, charges 159 francs twice on a long-distance route. Does the airline do business in fear of corona infection? “No, it’s the other way around,” says Edelweiss spokesman Andreas Meier. “If you reserve a vacant adjacent seat, you only pay half of our actual expenses for this seat.” Only when both neighboring seats reserve the free middle seat independently will the effort be truly covered.
However, additional effort is required on the customer’s part to reserve a free neighboring seat with Edelweiss. First of all, you must book your own flight. Only then can you secure a neighboring seat with a call to the service hotline. Whether this is possible depends on the booking situation, write Edelweiss on the home page. However, this does not mean that the vacant neighboring seat can be removed later. There only has to be two seats next to each other.
Additional seat: Fixed price is new
The possibility of reserving an additional seat on the plane for you has been around for a long time, also with other airlines. Musicians do this, for example, when they have to carry a valuable instrument with them. Fixed price is new to Edelweiss. With other airlines, the price of the vacant seat next to you depends on how expensive your own ticket is. The more expensive the ticket, the more expensive the neighboring seat is usually.
By the way, the vacant neighboring seat that has been reserved is also destined to actually remain vacant. Therefore, you should not sit comfortably in two seats or put your feet up. However, it is allowed to carry books or other personal items during the flight.
