Two years ago, squatters resisted an eviction in Altstetten. Two of the activists have now been sentenced to parole.
Federal court has upheld an unusually harsh sentence for two squatters – both are receiving final sentences for trespassing because the fines would obviously not have impressed them, writes the SDA.
“It is a fact that the two squatters were not impressed by the fines that have been imposed so far,” the federal court wrote in its ruling published Monday.
Therefore, the Lausanne judges confirmed a decision of the Zurich High Court. This also came to the conclusion that a fine would not prevent the two from continuing to squat.
Prison with probationary period
Therefore, he imposed a suspended prison sentence of 80 days for both, with a probationary period of three years. If they participate in an occupation again during these three years or if they commit a crime, they must serve the sentence.
The two staunch squatters, now 33, participated in an occupation in Zurich-Altstetten in 2018. Right across from the Letzipark shopping center, a group took over a disused Swisslife building.
When police tried to evacuate the house, the occupants initially doused them with water and foam. Later, however, they were arrested without resistance. 14 people were arrested. The old office building had to give way to a 25-story skyscraper.
