Karin Keller-Sutter will represent E-ID at federal filings in lieu of fighting the burqa ban.

Extraordinary constellation

That’s really unusual, says the Federal Councilor. As a general rule, a department only has to represent one submission to the Federal Council.
“But after a vote for Corona was canceled and we also have deadlines for popular initiatives, this constellation has already happened,” he explains.
Focus on a template
With the initiative “Yes to the prohibition of the veil” – the Federal Council recommends its rejection – and the federal law on the so-called E-ID, with which it can be identified in the digital world, two highly controversial proposals await Keller-Sutter .
The Justice Minister announced that she will hold a press conference on both at the beginning of the year, but also emphasized: “I certainly will not be able to do the same with both proposals.”
That means that the Federal Councilor of the FDP wants to focus on a proposal later. Your priority is with the E-ID. Because digitization is very important to Switzerland as a business location. “This has also been demonstrated now in the crisis of the crown. Therefore, electronic identity is probably in the fore a bit, ”says Keller-Suter.
Leave competition to the cantons
Perhaps, however, you may find it helpful not to have to be so committed to the veiling ban. After all, as a member of the government in the canton of St. Gallen, she presented one herself. “That was also in the context of thug violence around sports stadiums,” Keller-Suter defends today.
He also emphasizes: “The Federal Council rejects this ban on the veil.” The body believes that such a ban is not an issue that should be clarified in the federal constitution. “That is a clear cantonal competence that the Federal Council does not want to restrict,” says Keller-Suter.
But it is also clear: Karin Keller-Sutter wants to put her heart and soul into the E-ID and not when she says no to the “burqa initiative”.
