The situation for professional clubs in Switzerland is extremely difficult due to the Corona crisis. Expenses such as wages and salaries must be paid despite the zero on the income side. Ticket sales and stadium catering revenue is no longer due to ghost games. In this precarious situation, FC Basel decided to make use of the offer of the federal government and request À-fonds-perdu funds. This was reported by the “SRF Regional Journal Basel” on Friday. FCB CEO Roland Heri confirms the message.
The FCB is one of the first clubs to make use of this offer of assistance. It is not clear how much money the FCB should receive. Heri does not want to say this, but makes it clear that they are “a few million”.
The funds are subject to conditions
With the receipt of this money it is also clear that the FCB must reduce their salaries. To be precise: all wages that exceeded 150,000 francs per year in the summer of 2019 are added up, the red-blue has to save 20 percent. This is the federal condition for receiving Corona aid payments.
The advantage of red-blue in this context is that FCB has already cut several salaries in recent months. For example, there will probably not be many changes in terms of value for FC Basel employees.
Another condition of the federal government for the money from À-fonds-perdu is: The FCB cannot increase salaries in the next five years. Not even if an investor joined the club or Red-Blue should they play in the Champions League again. In order to raise wages, the aid money would first have to be returned to the federal government.
In this context, CEO Heri makes it clear that they wanted to cut salaries at FC Basel anyway to secure the future of the club.
