Around a thousand fans will gather in the city on Monday. It’s less about Stocker’s leave of absence than it is about Centricus rumors.
Valentin Stocker’s leave of absence was just the latest barrel-breaking news for most FC Basel fans. On short notice, Muttenzerkurve had called a meeting at Barfüsserplatz at lunchtime Monday, and shortly after 6pm, around 1,000 people had gathered to protest the latest events within the club.
It wasn’t primarily Stocker. Not even about 2: 6 against Winterthur or Saturday’s loss at St. Gallen. This is the general development of FCB. “Burgener is no longer acceptable for this club,” shouts one of the fans through his megaphone across the square. And the owner of the FCB would be recommended to listen carefully to the words of the fans.
In an interview with paid broadcaster Blue, Burgener claimed again on Sunday that current criticism would quiet down as soon as sporting success returns to Basel. The Barfüsserplatz impressions show, however, that this is a serious error of judgment on the part of the owner. Because the fans fear for their club and for the imminent entry of an investor.
It fits what “Bz Basel” Reports: The British Asset Manager Centricus I am about to join FCB and there could be “massive changes in shareholders.” Co-shareholder David Degen had been asked to clarify within a month whether he was exercising his preemptive right over another block of shares; however, Degen was not in a position to raise double-digit millions.
That’s what scares the fans. That is why almost 1000 people take to the streets on a Monday night, although these events are currently not allowed: the fear for the future of their FC Basel.
Less than two hours after the start, the event dissolves in front of the gates of the Landhof. Where it all started for FCB. But, of course, not without commenting on current developments. “Ok, knock it down,” the fans chant. For them it is clear that Valentin Stocker is only the youngest victim of the management of a club that they no longer want to accept in their FCB.
