As “Nau” reports, Alex Frei will be introduced today as Wil’s new coach. The national record scorer takes over from Ciriaco Sforza (50) who has migrated to FC Basel.
For Frei, who last worked as an under-21 coach at FCB but resigned due to differences with the club’s management, it is the first position for coaches at a professional level. The 41-year-old should have been a head coach at Basel, had it been for former sporting director Ruedi Zbinden. The deal ultimately fell through despite an existing contract. The club bosses ended up using Sforza as their new coach.
Now Frei wants to use FC Wil as a springboard for his coaching career, as many have done before him. Christian Gross, Marcel Koller, Hanspeter Latour, Martin Andermatt, Uli Forte, all of them were already on the sidelines in eastern Switzerland.
FC Wil has scheduled a press conference for 1.30 pm. (mpe)
