Baumgartner replaces Burgener: these are the most important findings of the strange FCB-GV
Only at 9:32 pm yesterday FC Basel posted a video message from Bernhard Burgener on its homepage. The abdicating owner and president explains in 2:15 minutes the most important results of the written GA. But it also raises questions that remain unanswered for the moment.
What we know:
Baumgartner is the new president
Bernhard Burgener announces in the video what to expect. In other words, Reto Baumgartner was elected president with a large majority. Born in Aargau, he buttoned his football boots for the FCB in the 1990s. His best moment was his promotion to the NLA in 1994. Baumgartner has been on the club’s board of directors since 2009. Now the members have chosen him as new club president.

Baumgartner succeeds Burgener. His share of the vote had steadily declined over the past three years and in 2019 was just 65 percent. That year, Burgener, as well as CEO Roland Heri and Peter von Büren, did not even stand for election. Officially due to the unnecessary personal union of the club president and the board. Unofficially, however, probably also to avoid his own vote.
Burgener remains the strong man of FC Basel. He is the main shareholder of FC Basel Holding AG and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AG since the summer of 2017.
2589 members voted
Votes were counted over the weekend and until noon on Monday. That’s significantly more than in a physical general meeting, in 2019 it was 1,515, for example. Overall, however, the FCB has more than 8,000 members. More than two-thirds of them chose not to vote. Maybe also because the writing was a bit too complex.
Donzé and Kaiser remain on the board
Besides Reto Baumgartner, only two other members will serve on the board in the future. The former Benno Kaiser and Dominik Donzé. Burgener says in the video: “All the other candidates did not achieve an absolute majority.” This means that not a single member of the “Yystoo” ticket for five makes it to the board. Silvia Schenker, Jo Vergeat, Patrick Fassbind, Tobias Adler and Daniel Schreier are as empty as the spontaneous candidates Dieter Bürge, Jean-Claude D. Gerber, Peter Hablützel, Felix Sutter and Peter Walker.

The new FCB statutes are rejected
Unlike the election of the club’s board of directors, the members of the FCB follow the recommendation of the “Yystoo” movement. The revised and modernized statutes under the leadership of Roland Heri were rejected. Burgener says, “Many members would like to see this topic covered in a physical general meeting. Here the FCB must again on the books. According to Burgener, the revised bylaws should be re-voted at the next general meeting, likely in early summer 2021, and then adopted.
Baumgartner is also the delegate
Since the new bylaws were rejected and apparently so was Patrick Fassbind’s motion, the new president Reto Baumgartner is also the delegate. Represents the interests of the association on the AG’s board of directors. Burgener says he is eager to work with Reto Baumgartner, whom he knows well from years together on the association’s board of directors.
Burgener and Heri not recommended for election
The members recommend to the delegate in the AG not to vote for Bernhard Burgener as president and Roland Heri as board of directors. Only Massimo Ceccaroni will be re-elected. With this vote, FCB members withdraw their trust in owner Burgener and CEO Heri. He will be re-elected to the Board of Directors without the vote of the delegate. But the members show that they are dissatisfied with the current leadership.

What we don’t know:
Exact numbers
The FCB announced yesterday that there are no exact figures except for the number of voting members. It remains open, among other things, with what percentage of directors were elected or not and what percentage of the members opposed the new statutes. The association wants to communicate this information today Tuesday.
What do the winners and losers say?
The new club president, Reto Baumgartner, will only comment on his election on Tuesday. “Yystoo” hasn’t responded yet either.

What about “Yystoo”?
After all, it is a bit strange. With the statutes and the recommendation for the election of the delegate against Burgener and Heri, the members of the FCB follow the recommendations of the “Yystoo” movement. However, none of the five “Yystoo” candidates will be elected to the board. Here the fundamental distrust of the members is clear.
