The long awaited general assembly of FC Basel will take place on 9 November. It has become clear since Tuesday that owner Bernhard Burgener will no longer be running for club president.
On the FC Basel website it says: “At the last AGM, we already emphasized that the constellation of the association’s board of directors is not sacrosanct for us and that we are very open to other suggestions from members. This is just a logical step to propose and elect an independent board of directors, as we predicted, after discussions with members. With the bylaws amended in consultation with the members, we have now created the conditions for this – that was a step that should have happened a long time ago. “
Power remains with Burgener
His decision to no longer run for the association’s presidency was not a reaction to public criticism against him. “Not at all. As I said, we started this process more than a year ago at the last General Assembly. Roland Heri and his team reviewed the bylaws for several months in close cooperation with various members and fan groups in various workshops. Fortunately, We were able to find a good match, which we can now present to the members of the association at the next General Assembly.
But one thing is also clear: there is little power associated with the office of club president. This remains with Burgener (63). He remains the majority shareholder of the holding company and therefore also a director of FC Basel AG.
“It will not disappoint the FCB”
His departure should not be seen as the first harbinger of a retirement as a club owner. “No”, says Burgener, “I have emphasized several times that in such a situation, with all the sporting and economic challenges ahead, I certainly will not disappoint the FCB and will simply give up. The club, all of our teams and our many employees are very important to me. It is my responsibility that we can get the ship back to calmer waters. “
In addition to Burgener, his employee Peter von Büren, FCB CEO Roland Heri, and legend Marco Streller are no longer running for the club’s board of directors.
