His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas will start right behind in Sunday’s race.
Lewis Hamilton is in pole position before the first Formula 1 race in Portimão. The Briton at Mercedes secured the best starting position for the Portuguese Grand Prix ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas.
Hamilton left Bottas a tenth behind on his final decisive attempt. This means the world champion is right in front of the starting line for the ninth time this season, and for the 97th time overall.
No Alfa Romeo exploit
What was special about the internal duel between the two Mercedes drivers was that they did their fastest laps not on the softest ones, but on medium-size tires. Max Verstappen at Red Bull and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari will be in the second row of the grid.
For the Alfa Romeo team drivers, it was over after the first part. Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi remained in the starting positions 16 and 17.
Defect in the route forces a delay
Qualifying started half an hour late. The reason for the delay was repair work on the track. A manhole cover in the drainage system at the edge of the runway had come loose from its anchor. The cause of the damage was Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari, who will start from 15th in the race on Sunday.
