High hopes have been pinned on the supposed panacea, vitamin D, for a long time. In fact, laboratory tests and studies with a small number of patients have shown promising results. But this could hardly ever be confirmed in large studies with control groups. The potential benefits have now become very manageable. The solar vitamin, which the body in our latitudes in particular produces with the help of light, is losing its aura.

The elaborate European study “Do-Health”, directed by the Zurich geriatrician Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, which has just been published in the magazine “Jama” also contributes to this. According to this, vitamin D does not present advantages for the risk of bone, muscle and memory fractures in healthy people over 70 years of age. According to official recommendations, about half were deficient in vitamin D.
