Adults must wear a mask in all elementary and middle school areas. The obligation to wear a mask outside the classroom applies to high school students because classes would mix there and traceability of contacts could not be guaranteed, the Basel-based directorate for education, culture and sports announced on Tuesday. However, young people are allowed to remove their masks during class.
Primary and secondary teachers, meanwhile, can only remove their masks in classrooms and meeting rooms if the minimum distance of 1.5 meters can be maintained.
Also, according to the notification, camps and school trips with overnight stays are not allowed until the end of the year.
Summary of the most important additional protective measures:
For primary and secondary level
- Adults should wear a hygienic mask in the entire area of kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools, especially in the entrance areas, hallways and bathrooms. Teachers can remove masks in classrooms and meeting rooms, provided the still applicable minimum distance of 1.5 meters can be maintained.
- Camps and school trips with overnight stays abroad cannot take place until the end of the year.
For high school
- The requirement to wear a mask outside the classroom also applies to high school students, as classes are mixed there and traceability of contacts cannot be guaranteed. During class lessons, young people can remove their masks.
- All high school students receive a packet of hygienic masks to wear to school at the end of the week.
