In Spain, all citizens receive an invitation to get vaccinated. Anyone who does not show up for the appointment is threatened with a list entry. And the Health Minister apparently has European cooperation in mind in this regard.

Spain wants to register all citizens who do not want to be vaccinated against Corona in a registry. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, in an interview granted this Monday to the television channel La Sexta. All citizens will receive an invitation to a vaccination appointment according to the vaccination plan. Vaccination is voluntary, but anyone who does not accept the invitation will be registered. The registry is not public and data protection will be rigorous, but the data will be made available to “European partners”, the minister stressed. What that exactly means seems unclear so far.

In Spain, as in other EU countries, the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 began on Sunday. The first Spanish to be vaccinated was Araceli Hidalgo, 96, in Guadalajara. For the next twelve weeks, the Madrid government foresees a total of around 4.6 million additional doses of vaccine, with which almost 2.3 million of the 47 million citizens of Spain will be vaccinated. Most of the population should be immunized before summer.

Spain has exceeded the 50,000 death toll from the coronavirus. The Spanish Ministry of Health announced on Monday that the death toll had reached 50,122. So far, there have been almost 1.88 million infections from the virus in the country of 47 million people.

Nationwide exit restrictions have helped slow the spread of the virus in recent weeks. Like most EU countries, Spain began vaccinations against Covid-19 in nursing homes on Sunday.
