Expert assessment – BAG: Corona mutation is probably already in Switzerland – News

  • Entry to Switzerland from Great Britain and South Africa has been banned from Monday.
  • Anyone who has come to Switzerland from one of the two countries since December 14 has to be quarantined for ten days.
  • This is to prevent the spread of the newly discovered, seemingly more contagious variant of the coronavirus in Britain and South Africa as much as possible.

According to BAG expert Patrick Mathys, the probably most contagious mutated corona virus is probably already in Switzerland. It has not been tested here yet, but it has been tested in neighboring countries. Therefore, it must be assumed that it is also in Switzerland.

“The virus has once again been one step ahead of us,” Mathys told a news conference in Bern on Monday. “We have to react and take the appropriate measures.” For this reason, the Federal Council decided on new measures.

Around 10,000 people from Great Britain or South Africa are believed to be currently in Switzerland. The BAG is now clarifying with the relevant airlines. In total, there are 92 flights from Great Britain and four from South Africa. The relevant information would then be sent to the cantons. The implementation of quarantine measures is then the responsibility of the cantons.

If these people do not show any symptoms, according to BAG expert Patrick Mathys, they are allowed to come out of quarantine ten days after entry.

Massive test in clarification

This means that people who entered the country on December 14 and feel healthy do not have to start the quarantine again, but only have to stay in the hotel or vacation home for the remaining three days.

When asked whether special mass tests should be carried out in cantons where there are particularly large numbers of British tourists, Mathys said that the FOPH was in contact with the affected cantons and that corona tests were being discussed for the British who had entered. to the country. But he still couldn’t give more details.
