- Swiss and EU citizens will need a passport from October 2021 to enter the UK.
- Identity cards should no longer be accepted.
This stems from a UK government model of future European border traffic that was published today. The new regulation also applies to visitors from Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
Identity cards too insecure
Identity cards were one of the “least secure documents”, it was said to justify it. With the requirement of a passport, the security of Great Britain is reinforced.
The country left the European Union at the end of January. However, there is still a transition phase until the end of December, during which practically nothing will change. At the end of the year, without an agreement on a trade pact, there is a risk of a strong economic breakdown with tariffs and other obstacles.
By contrast, the British already need a passport to enter the EU and Switzerland, especially since there are no identity papers in Britain.
