The new
Fall 1772: Claire, Jamie, Brianna, and Roger return from a trip to the city. There Claire bought peanuts, among other things, from which she plans to produce peanut butter. The lush mood soon clouds when they pass a house that appears to have caught fire not long ago. All of the residents appear to have died in the fire, prompting Roger to ask why no one could be safe.
Jamie realizes that people were dead before the fire broke out. Claire finds an arrowhead in one of the bodies, which appears to be from Indians. A little outside the house, Roger makes a horrible find. There is a young woman lying there, more dead than alive. Jamie wants to end his suffering, but Roger comes before him. They bury the family and move on.
A look back shows how Claire eats a peanut butter and jam sandwich during a stop on her second trip through the stones. Brianna had packed this for her as food. In Fraser’s Ridge, the two women remember that day as Ian (John Bell) played with Jemmy and the opal that Claire had found in the Indian skeleton called Otterzahn (Trevor Carroll).
When Jemmy grabs the stone, she suddenly screams and explains that the stone is hot. Ian dismisses this as a childish trick, because the stone feels normal and cold to him. Brianna walks in and confirms that the stone also feels unusually warm to her. When Jemmy touches the stone again, it suddenly breaks. Then a loud buzz begins that, apart from Jamie and Ian, everyone can hear. It is clear that Jemmy also has the ability to travel through time.
Later, Ian confronts Claire and Jamie about what happened to the opal. Claire finally initiates Ian in everything and prepares him so that Brianna and Roger can leave her. However, before Brianna and Roger can think about it, a larger group of riders is fast approaching, led by Richard (Chris Larkin) and Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy). The two demand a favor from Jamie as they also supported him against the regulators. The two brothers established a guard to defend the settlements against attacks that have been mounting recently.
When asked, Jamie confirmed that they, too, had witnessed a house fire. Richard Brown demands that Jamie and Roger, along with the men from Fraser’s Ridge, also set up a patrol to defend the lands. The men are certain that the Indians are behind the attacks on the settlements. However, the Frasers do not share this opinion and Jamie comforted the men.
Claire and Jamie visit Ulysses (Colin McFarlane) in a cabin in the woods that Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) had previously used as a hideout. Since Ulysses killed Gerald Forbes (Billy Boyd) to save Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy), he has now been on the run. It turns out that since Mr. Cameron’s death, Ulysses has not been a slave and has voluntarily stayed by Jocasta’s side. Ironically, the only one who can attest to this is the dead lawyer Forbes.
Brianna and Roger finally have time to talk. Brianna suspects that Jemmy was more sensitive to stone because her parents have the ability to travel through time, which would speak for Roger as a biological father. They decide to start the journey in a month and tell the others that Roger will start working at Boston University, not to mention that this will happen 200 years in the future.
The two use the remaining time to say goodbye to their family and friends, leading to a series of emotional scenes during the episode. Fergus (Cesar Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle), who are already expecting their fourth child, are as surprised and sad as Lizzie (Caitlin O’Ryan), that they can no longer imagine not being next to Brianna. However, everyone is trying to make the most of the remaining time.
A short time later, Lord John (David Berry) arrives at Fraser’s Ridge, who also plans to leave North Carolina. Lord Dunsany passed away, converting William (Oliver Finnegan), Jamie’s biological son and John’s adoptive son, now heir to Hellwater and ninth earl of Ellesmere. John gives Jamie a current portrait of William, whose resemblance to Jamie and Brianna is becoming clearer. Jamie arranges for Ulysses to travel to England disguised as Lord John’s servant so that he can truly be a free man there.
John’s visit inspires Jamie to tell Brianna about his half brother. Brianna is surprised and saddened by this news, as she will not have a chance to meet William. Jamie encourages her to search William’s history books, as he must have left historical traces as a count.
Brianna is obviously having a hard time leaving her family behind, but she knows that soon she will no longer be safe in North Carolina due to the upcoming war. Ian wants to know if they can’t change the story, but Claire and Brianna explain that certain big events are pending. Ian realizes that some things have been changed, for example, by Claire’s medical skills. He would also like to arrange something to do with his wife, but Claire and Brianna have to disappoint him because not everyone can travel through time.
A few days later, Lionel Brown is back at the Frasers’ door. He wants an answer from Jamie. Jamie politely rejects it. He has spent enough time in armed conflict in recent years and now he wants to dedicate himself to life in his settlement and his family. Lionel is visibly upset, but his wife still needs medical help.
Lionel’s wife arrives at Claire with a broken doll. When asked, she finally admits that her husband did this to her after she refused to sleep with him. She does not want to have a child with a violent man and has followed the recommendations of the article by Dr. Rawlings, Claire’s pseudonym. When Lionel enters the treatment room, he sees the plaque with Dr. Rawling’s name on Claire’s medicine cabinet and quickly adds one and one.
On Brianna and Roger’s last night, Claire wasted no chance to create her own interpretation of peanut butter jam sandwiches, which is greeted with general fun. However, the farewell between mother and daughter is probably the most emotional of all. Brianna made portraits of Roger and Jemmy for her family.
As Brianna finds it difficult to separate from her parents, Ian accompanies her, Roger and Jemmy to the stone circle the next morning. Roger also bequeaths his piece of land to Ian. The trip to the stones lasts about two weeks. Brianna and Roger have prepared well. Each of them has a gem, Jemmy has Bonnet’s black diamond (Edward Speleers), and they are tied with a rope. With one last glance at Ian, they take the step. Ian also tries to walk through the stones, but finds the path blocked.
Brianna, Roger and Jemmy wake up safe in a forest. However, this looks a little different than the forest from which you started your journey. His initial joy turns to disbelief and Roger asks, “What the hell?” Apparently, the trip did not go as planned and did not reappear in real time. The question is, of course, where all three ended. Either they are still in 1772 or they went elsewhere.
Claire and Jamie try to distract themselves from the pain of parting from work. When there’s an explosion at Jamie’s whiskey distillery, he hits the bottom with Fergus and Josiah (Paul Gorman). Claire and Marsali are still busy with a patient. However, the explosion was probably just amusement, because soon afterwards some of the men in Browns Claire’s treatment room suddenly assault, kill their patient, knock out Marsali, and kidnap Claire.
Germain (Robin Scott), the little son of Marsali and Fergus, watched everything and can teach the returning men the shocking news. Jamie does not hesitate and marches towards Flaming Cross to light and call his men to fight.
conclusion
After the episode “Journey” was initially built around Brianna and Roger’s emotional farewell, the events suddenly came to an end in the truest sense of the word: an explosive ending. The situation with the Browns has been tense since Claire suspected the brothers behind the Isaiah Morton (Jon Tarcy) attack, but Lionel’s discovery of Dr. Rawling’s true identity and Jamie’s refusal to join his command. security men seem to have spilled the barrel.
In addition to the tragedy over Claire and Marsali’s health, there is also the question of the whereabouts of Brianna and Roger. The end of the fifth season of “Outlander” next week will be really exciting in several ways.
