Social media
Emil (87) is now on Twitter, but an even older Hünenberger mayor surprised everyone and himself on the channel.
Over the weekend, two seniors from Central Switzerland celebrated their premiere on Twitter and immediately generated countless followers and retweets. In the case of Emil Steinberger (87) this is not too surprising, but in the case of Hermann Unternährer (89), the former mayor of Hünenberg, it is.
Hermann Unterährer definitely did not expect such a reaction. On the phone he says:
“If I had known, I would not have.”
What happened? On Saturday, the 89-year-old mayor of Hünenberg posted a tweet for the first time. Two days later, Unternährer’s first tweet received around 18,000 likes and was retweeted over 1,200 times.
This is my first tweet in 89 years. Since Corona limits my scope of activity, I deal with new media at home.

A grandson explained Twitter to him and told him that he should use it too. And since Unternährer and his wife are always at home because of the crown, he thought: why not? So Hünenberg’s Twitter joined in “reading and maybe writing something.” The first thing he wrote now has almost 4,900 followers, including from Germany and Austria.
The newcomer to Twitter can’t explain why it sparked such a huge response. “I have no idea,” he says, “I have no idea.” Unterährer will now wait and try something later.
“Finally good news”
With more than 4,800 followers, Unternährer outshines another, much more well-known senior who also celebrated his Twitter premiere last weekend: Emil Steinberger. Almost shaking because he’s on Twitter for the first time, the cabaret artist laughed and started a short video message greeting the Twitter community.
Hello, here comes my first tweet. Greetings to you #Emil from Switzerland pic.twitter.com/B4FEzUXajQ

And he wasted no time returning the hello and subscribing to Emil’s channel. 24 hours after his Twitter debut, the 87-year-old from Lucerne has around 4,500 followers. Countless of them responded to his video message with congratulations and expressions of honor. One user even wrote: “Finally, good news. Emil on Twitter. “When asked about the many reactions, Emil says:
“I find it exciting, funny and moving what people are tweeting for me.”
It was a long time before he was so curious that he got his wife to show him on Twitter and he was finally ready to “stick his nose in there.” That he only does this at the tender age of 87 doesn’t matter to Emil. Age is not a problem for him. He says:
“Curiosity has always guided me and that is why I am now exploring this means of communication.”
But Emil still doesn’t know how much time he will have in the near future to have fun on Twitter. After all, he is writing his autobiography.
