Jeannine Gmelin missed her fourth European Championship medal in Poznan. Roman Röösli / Barnabé Delarze and Sofia Meakin each take silver.

It shouldn’t be like this: after gold in 2018 and silver in 2019, Jeannine Gmelin had to bury her dream of getting the third consecutive European Championship medal, the fourth overall. The Zurich Oberlander didn’t really get going in the Skiff final and finished the race in Poznan, Poland, in fifth place.

Like the previous year, the victory went to the Irish Sanita Puspure, who beat Magdalena Lobnig of Austria and the Greek Anneta Kyridou. Kyridou had irresistibly surpassed Gmelin in the later stages of the race. The Swiss driver did better in the middle of the race and was now close to the podium. In the end he also had to give way to the Danish Fie Udby Erichsen.

Röösli / Delarze take the silver behind the Dutch

Roman Röösli and Barnabé Delarze failed to complete their set of EM medals in double sculls with the gold medal. After silver in Lucerne last year and bronze in 2017 at Racice in the Czech Republic, the team from Lucerne and Lausanne again won the silver medal in Poznan.

Röösli / Delarze got off to a furious start and distinguished themselves from the competition early on. Dutchmen Melvin Twellaar and Stef Broenink did an intermediate sprint and held the lead until the end. The bronze went to the Irish couple Daire Lynch / Ronan Byrne.

Silver for Meakin too

From a Swiss point of view, Sofia Meakin, 22, got off to a good start in Sunday’s final. The French-speaking Swiss won the silver medal in the non-Olympic lightweight single.

Meakin only had to admit defeat to Dutch Martine Veldhuis, who led the race from start to finish, but still had to tremble for gold in the end. Meakin had passed the first intermediate time at the 500m in fourth position, in the middle of the race she was already third before she overtook Italian Paola Piazzolla in the last quarter of the course.

Schäuble / Struzina with respectable success

For Jan Schäuble and Andri Struzina in the light double scull, reaching the final A, the first in a major international event, was a success. The Swiss duo could not keep up with the leaders and entered as the fifth team before the Ukrainian boat.

The young Swiss women’s double scull also advanced by surprise to the final A. Pascale Walker (25), Lisa Lötscher (20), Ella von der Schulenburg (22) and Salomé Ulrich (19) had to pull the best boats after 1500 meters. They lost the fight for 5th place against the Italians and finished 6. The Dutch women won.
