Basel District President Elisabeth Ackermann (Greens) does not appear for the second ballot. He landed in ninth place in last Sunday’s general election.

“I am very sorry to give up the political work that I was very happy to do,” Ackermann said Tuesday in a Green Basel-Stadt message. In the given circumstances, he lacks the strength to move to a second vote.

The party itself expresses its regret at the resignation of the current president of the government, who has achieved a lot during her term. However, the decision is understandable after the public campaign against him.

Ackermann came under strong criticism in the Grand Council and in the media after overcoming a leadership crisis at the Basel State Historical Museum, which was assessed as insufficient. Parliament’s business audit committee had criticized her harshly for this. She had also been repeatedly accused of uninspired government and a wooden appearance in public appearances.

Elected to the regional council in 2016

The 57-year-old former guitar teacher Ackermann was elected to the governing council in 2016, where she assumed the presidential department from her predecessor and party colleague Guy Morin. In terms of content, this department houses the department of culture and cantonal and urban development. As head of cultural funding, Ackermann repeatedly had to deal with financial problems at the five state museums.

On election Sunday, Ackermann did not rule out a second ballot. This despite the fact that it had been frankly punished by voters from the left spectrum. In the general elections for the government of Basel, he obtained ninth place, behind three new candidates from the PLD, SP and GLP.

Substitution decision Tuesday night

The candidates for the second ballot are currently newcomer Stephanie Eymann (LDP), SP Grand Councilor Kaspar Sutter, current Director of Justice and Security Baschi Dürr (FDP) and GLP Grand Councilor Esther Keller. The senior vice president and PPE candidates have withdrawn. It’s still open to who the Green Alliance or the SP will send on the run.

The Basel-Stadt Greens want to decide how to proceed at their general meeting on Tuesday night. “We have taken note of this and regret this decision,” said the resignation of Ackermann by the SP, which together with the Green Alliance is the majority of the government since 2005. The EP also wants to decide how to proceed at the delegates meeting on Tuesday at night.

At Telebasel’s request, Ackermann does not want to comment on his decision. The Basel-Stadt Greens would like to decide on the next steps at their general meeting on Tuesday evening.
