Today, exactly two months from now, we should meet the President of the United States for the next four years. Americans will vote on November 3; everything is going well and, if the result is not too close, the winner must be sure on the morning of November 4. The candidates: Donald Trump (74) and Joe Biden (77).
In the last almost two years I have commented on and analyzed political developments week after week in my “VISTA a USA” column. Today I would like to give the floor to the voters. For our weekly newsletter on the US elections (subscribe here), I asked Americans around the world two questions: What topic is most important to you? Who will you choose?
Rehema Ally-Lifa (23 years old) he’s busy. The student has been campaigning for the “Black Lives Matter” movement for years. The death of George Floyd († 46) shocked her. “Our country has to change,” says Ally-Lifa. It is critical that people vote en masse this year to “fight against systematic racism and oppression.” Ally-Lifa makes it clear that she will not vote for Donald Trump. “We need a leader who will lead us into an era of new beginnings.” She hopes her president will address systematic racism and police brutality against blacks and propose reforms.
Gari Feldman (29) He is a Republican. The man from Minneapolis, Minnesota elected Barack Obama’s challenger Mitt Romney in 2012 and voted for Donald Trump four years ago. “I don’t really like him as a person, but he convinces me with his politics,” says Feldman. He gave Trump a good report, especially for his “America first” policy: “He kept his promises. We finally have a president who represents our interests. “In the upcoming US elections, what worries him most is the economy, which has suffered so much from the Corona crisis.” Do you think Joe Biden can get us back on track? Definitely not! It has to be Trump again. In these four years he has shown that he can do it. “
Shane O’Garro (40 years old) It currently only deals with one issue: the BLM protests. “As a black Christian, my life is particularly difficult these days,” says the pastor of a church north of San Diego. “I have seen racists use the word of God to justify their actions.” He blames the media for the situation: “Over and over it was journalists who portrayed us African-Americans as thugs and murderers on the evening news.” How can anything change? “Choose a president who is not silent on racism, but openly fights against it!”
Camden Jones (18) comes from an ultra-conservative family. “I grew up in a Republican family and internalized the values of this party,” he says. Jones, who will be able to vote for the first time in November, cites his grandparents as an example. “You have a small business. When a Republican is president, he is better off financially. Then my grandparents will have to pay less taxes, ”explains Jones. But he’s not a fan of Donald Trump himself and slipped into the middle of the political spectrum as a teenager. Jones’s first concern: the environment. “I want a president who takes the issue seriously and acts actively against climate change.” Camden Jones does not yet know which candidate he will vote for in November.
She * is 27 years old, the daughter of an immigrant family and identifies as a “fag”. Melanie ViloriaBorn a woman, he does not want to be called neither woman nor man. In the English language, she insists on a gender-neutral greeting. Viloria has been involved in the American LGBTQ movement for years. As a person directly affected, the matter is close to your heart. “No one should be at work, in the hospital or in other everyday places like restaurants because of their sexuality,” she says. Therefore, Viloria wants a president who will defend the rights of the LGBTQ community. And: “As children of an immigrant family, I would like immigrants to find a simple structure that allows them to become citizens of this country.”
* There are no gender-neutral personal pronouns in the German language.
Ian Grabill (30 years old) He immigrated to Canada with his childhood sweetheart in the spring. But even in exile he thinks about American politics every day, says Grabill. “They will be very important elections,” he warns. What are the most important tasks that you think the president has to solve? “The pandemic, the economy and the division of society”. Grabill does not endorse Donald Trump or Joe Biden. He will continue to vote for the Democratic challenger. “For his runner-up, Kamala Harris. She is very smart and convinces me. “
Chad Jones (39) wants BLICK readers to know one thing above all: “Donald Trump is by far the best president I have ever elected!” The Tennessee state man has already voted Democrats, but: “Trump is perfect for a construction worker like me,” he says. The difference is that the Democrats speak well, but then they do nothing. Chad Jones: “President Trump has already done a lot for us. Imagine what you could do with four more years. “
America is on the way to fascism, he says Al Wise (65) – an American who has consistently voted Republican all his life. That will end in 2020. “This year I will vote for Joe Biden. I think Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy, ”says Wise. The retiree cites Trump’s rhetoric as the main reason. “His only stated plan for the next four years is to stay in power.” Al Wise wants to do his part to remove the acting president of the United States in November.
Jari Niskala (42 years old) traveled across the Atlantic to America from Finland as a teenager. The IT entrepreneur found love in California and started a family. She has been following local politics since her first day in the United States, says Niskala. It has never been as bad as now. “No matter what I think of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, Donald Trump is not an alternative. The president of the United States stopped doing everything possible to dismantle environmental measures to protect our countries and waters, ”says Niskala. He also often disagrees with Biden, but: “I can trust him to rule the country to the best of my knowledge and beliefs. You can’t say that about Trump. “In any case, Niskala said he didn’t have much confidence in the political system.” But now it’s important to stop the bleeding, “he says, referring to Donald Trump.
The US presidential elections will take place on November 3, 2020. Current President Donald Trump is seeking a second term. Can he defend his position or will challenger Joe Biden win for the Democrats?
