The defeat is related to the affair surrounding the school’s dental clinic in Schaffhausen, to which Christian Amsler was subordinate. There were indications of grievances, but a parliamentary commission of inquiry was needed to uncover them, while Christian Amsler exercised little self-criticism.
In addition, Christian Amsler wanted to become a Federal Councilor and then a Council of States. They both failed. These ambitions didn’t exactly leave voters with the impression that Christian Amsler is on fire for the governing council office.
Polarization in the governing council
On paper, the governing council of Schaffhausen is now a little to the left, as two representatives of the SP are now there. Above all, however, polarization is likely to increase. Under Dino Tamagni, Schaffhausen has a second senior vice president government counselor who is more politicized conservative than his predecessor Ernst Landolt. He was said to be a government councilor for the left-wing green vice presidency. Again and again he deviated from the party line.
Here Dino Tamagni will politicize more on the SVP line. That could mean that the FDP plays a bigger role, although it loses a government seat. The FDP’s remaining government adviser, Martin Kessler, is likely to tip the balance on many government decisions in the future.
