In the election of the 140 members of the Great Council, dominated by the bourgeoisie, the SVP is put to the test. It has held 45 seats for 12 years and is by far the largest parliamentary group. In the National Council election in October 2019, the SVP lost nearly 6.5 percentage points and ended with a 31.5 percent share of the vote.

The SP, the second largest parliamentary group with 27 seats, is on the rise, as it was four years ago in the Grand Council elections. The trend is different for the FDP (22 seats) and the CVP (17 seats). Four years ago, the FDP rose slightly, but lost percentage points in the National Council election. It was the exact opposite of CVP.

BDP is no longer there

The bourgeois parties hope to win seats because the BDP (4 seats) will no longer run. For 12 years, the Greens have been represented with 10 seats on the Grand Council. The Green Liberal Party currently has 7 seats. Both parties gained ground in the election of the National Council. A constant in Aargau politics is the EPP with 6 seats in parliament.

The distribution of the 140 seats in the Grand Council after the 2016 elections: SVP (45), SP (27), FDP (22), CVP (17), Greens (10), GLP (7), EPP (6 ), BDP (4), EDU (2).

The parties were unable to enter list connections to secure the remaining votes. Aargau has been using the “Doppelter Pukelsheim” electoral system since 2009.
