The Association for the Environment and Population (Ecopop), the Swiss Association for Industry and Agriculture (SVIL) and the Stop Littering Switzerland association say yes to the limitation initiative. They see it as a last chance for sustainable ecological, social and economic change, of course, in Switzerland.
The consequences of the growing overcrowding in Switzerland are dire, it was said in Bern on Monday at a press conference in the run-up to the vote on the SVP’s “limitation initiative”, which the Swiss people will vote on on September 27. For one million immigrants, an area of 57,000 soccer fields had to be built in the last 13 years.
The density of excess buildings and the loss of peace and quiet and recreational areas led to a decrease in the quality of life for everyone, said Ecoppop managing director Andreas Thommen. The potential economic benefits of immigration never outweigh the loss of these intangibles.
Hungertodrisiko
SVIL Managing Director Hans Bieri emphasized that Switzerland is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. This brand must no longer be undermined if Switzerland is to prevent the risk of hunger in the event of disrupted supply chains globally. Immigration is not a human right or a prerequisite for economic prosperity.
Christine Gross from the Stop Littering Switzerland association sees one last chance to stop the disastrous consequences of the free movement of people on the environment and the rallying of people in a yes to the limitation initiative.
In late November 2014, a radical initiative by Ecopop to limit immigration with a fixed upper limit to just 0.2 percent of the permanent resident population failed at the polls with a 74.1 percent non-turnout. Only the campaign for an independent and neutral Switzerland (Auns) and some SVP cantonal parties had recommended acceptance of the initiative at that time. (aeg / sda)
