After an inexplicable accident: the highest mountain in Switzerland has a cross on top again

The Dufourspitze, Switzerland’s highest peak at 4,634 meters above sea level, has a cross again. The old summit cross was supposedly destroyed by vandals two years ago.

Italian and Zermatt mountain guides reinstalled a cross on the top of the Dufourspitze on Wednesday, the “Walliser Boat” quotes the president of the Zermatt Mountain Guides Association, Denis Gruber, who was there on this beautiful day.

It’s not entirely certain what happened to the cross at the top of the Dufourspitze two years ago in the summer, he said. The Zermatt Mountain Rescue Team discovered parts of the ancient cross at the foot of the south face of the mountain. Since the remains of the cross showed no signs of lightning, it is assumed that the cross was deliberately destroyed.

When installing the new cross, the mountain guides wore traditional tunics. “A cross at the top just belongs to our mountains,” Gruber said cheerfully. The cross bears an inscription that recalls the freedom of the mountains and the overcoming of borders, as the “Walliser Bote” continues. (sda)

On September 11, 2001, two airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York. Another plane collided with the Pentagon in Washington, and a fourth plane, presumably heading for Washington, crashed to the ground in Pennsylvania.
