Crown chaos at the Giro d’Italia: After a total of 8 positive tests with 5 teams, the Tour of Italy faces an uncertain future. A total of 571 tests were conducted on Sunday and Monday. There were corona infections in Mitchelton-Scott, Sunweb, Jumbo-Visma, AG2R-La Mondiale, and Ineos Grenadiers. 2 drivers and 6 team members are affected.
In the Mitchelton-Scott team, in which British co-favorite Simon Yates had recently tested positive, there were 4 infections among staff members. As a consequence, the team withdrew from the Giro.
Kruijswijk among the infected
Jumbo-Visma is also not included. Dutch team leader and co-favorite Steven Kruijswijk tested positive. Sunweb driver Michael Matthews and an employee of AG2R-La Mondiale and Ineos Grenadiers are also infected.
The impact this development could have on the course of the race was initially unclear.
