Yesterday Switzerland looked at British Wales, today it looked at Valais. In the small country of the United Kingdom, a mini-blockade, to be applied from Friday, is trying to control Corona. Already on Thursday, the mountainous canton will defend itself against the virus with an almost total blockade.
In Switzerland, the canton of Valais is the most affected by the pandemic. In early October, the numbers spiked to 136 infections in one week, then 590, and suddenly skyrocketed to 1,919 infections. There will be more this week.
“The virus is everywhere”
This is why the Valais government is cracking down: the only thing separating the canton from spring closure is that schools, restaurants and shops remain open. One thing is crucial now, said State Councilor Frédéric Favre (41, FDP): “Let lives be saved.”
The harshness of the Valais doesn’t even stop at the front door. Because: “The virus is everywhere,” explains Government Minister Esther Waeber-Kalbermatten (68, SP). And the president of the Council of State, Christophe Darbellay (49, CVP), adds that people become infected with good friends because it is precisely there that they are neglected.
While the British Welsh closed for just two weeks, no more than ten people are allowed on Walliser Stuben until November 30. Even at weddings and funerals, large groups are not allowed.
Avoid contact as much as possible
Even in public spaces, people can no longer meet. A maximum of four people is allowed at a table in restaurants and pubs. There is a curfew at 10 pm
Bars, clubs and brothels are closed anyway. But movie theaters, museums, concert halls and fitness clubs also had to close. Free time should be spent outdoors or within your own four walls.
Darbellay clarified: “Experts advise not only that people at risk no longer go out, but also that all other people no longer go out.” Contacts should be avoided entirely where possible.
Soccer is prohibited
Contact sports such as soccer or judo are also prohibited in amateur clubs. However, skiing is allowed. As reported by the Zermatt Mountain Railways, they are opening as planned. However, a mask is now required on chair lifts and chair lifts.
FC Sion home games are ghost matches until the end of November, because until then spectators are no longer allowed in the stadiums.
Mask in the office too
Wearing a mask is now mandatory when working indoors, unless you have a separate office. Even with colleagues in the police car, as Darbellay pointed out to the media.
Visits to hospitals and homes for the elderly and the elderly are again prohibited. Exceptions should only be allowed in justified cases of difficulties. 155 nursing home residents have already tested positive. That’s more than double what it was a week ago.
Unable to rule out full crash
Darbellay appealed to everyone to show solidarity. “We can only fight this epidemic together,” said the former president of CVP Switzerland. If it turns out in the coming weeks that the measures are not enough to stop the increase in corona infections and hospitalizations, there will be no way to avoid even stricter measures.
That would put Valais under lock and key again. A situation that the cantonal government wants to prevent as much as possible.
