Across Switzerland, restaurants, bars and cafes are gearing up for next week. Because from Monday everyone can receive guests again, although subject to conditions. For example, only groups of four can sit at a table (families with children excluded), there must be a distance of two meters between the tables and the hosts must ask the guests to provide their contact details.
However, the factories are not completely open. Starting at midnight, the fun is over! At the instruction of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), restaurants, including pubs and bars, must leave their customers outside the door. All catering establishments must be closed between midnight and 6 a.m.
Because inhibitions fall with alcohol
In this way, the federal government wants to prevent “guest groups from mixing and that social distance receives less attention.” After midnight, according to the BAG, the possibility of “excessive alcohol consumption” increased, and with it the risk that official requirements, such as staying away, would no longer be met.
For a limited period of time, for how long it is unclear, the police lesson is effectively being reinstated, which has ceased to apply in all cantons. According to “Tages-Anzeiger” in the canton of Zurich has not received police training since 1997.
“Punch in the face”
“We did not know that the time for the police was approaching, they only informed us that this was being controlled,” Gastrosuisse president Casimir Platzer tells BLICK (58). “Yesterday we discovered it in the regulations and immediately passed it on to our members.”
For them it’s terrible: “It’s a punch in the face,” says Nicole Holenstein (45), owner Holenstein Gastro. It owns the Gräbli-Bar in Zurich and 16 other restaurants. “We make the most sales at the Graebi Bar between midnight and 6 a.m. Actually, we would have been the first to open the bar on Monday at 00.01. »
The mandatory mask for waiters has advantages
And stains are further threatened: service personnel are not required to wear a protective mask, but are strongly recommended. And the masks decide whether restaurant guests are to be quarantined.
If a waiter tests positive for Corona, cantons must find out who they have served in the past 48 hours and quarantine these guests for 10 days. Unless the waiter wore a mask, thus protecting his environment from infection.
“Whoever wears a mask protects others”
The cantonal doctor Rudolf Hauri, president of the Association of Cantonal Doctors, confirms the “Tages-Anzeiger”: “If an infected person wears a hygiene mask, he protects others from infection. So you are not considered a contact person if you are more than two meters away. This provision applies in all cantons.
In stains, where service personnel are masked, guests are at significantly less risk of being quarantined and may not be able to report to work for two weeks. In view of this, it would not be surprising if many restaurants put masks on staff. It is a competitive advantage over stains that do not.
Gastrosuisse President Platzer is not happy about that. “Once again uncertainty breeds, serving neither the industry nor the host,” he says. It must be said very clearly that the time the waiter or waitress falls below the 2 meter distance is seconds. “The risk of infection is very low, this has also been confirmed by the BAG, and therefore the Federal Council has also waived the obligation to use it.”
