Two weeks before Britain’s final departure from the EU institutions, pressure can already be felt on the important trade route through the English Channel. At the end of the week, video recordings of long truck traffic jams at the entrance to the Eurotunnel in Folkestone, England circulated on Twitter.
A high volume of freight traffic in both directions is expected for Christmas and then again shortly before the New Year, a spokesman for Eurotunnel operator Getlink said on Friday when asked about the dpa. The reasons for this are increased operations during the Christmas season, medical supplies due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the increase in many stocks before the end of the Brexit transition phase.
Serious delays in the movement of goods
Britain’s ports have been congested for weeks. Some ships have already had to be turned away. This also leads to more traffic in the Eurotunnel, as container ships are partially unloaded at ports on the mainland and goods are then brought to Britain by truck, the spokesperson said.
If a deal between London and Brussels is not reached in talks on a Brexit trade pact before the end of the year, there is a risk of tariffs and other trade barriers between Britain and the EU. In this case, serious additional delays are expected in the freight traffic in the English Channel. (SDA)
