On Saturday afternoon, a surfer from Aare had an accident in the water at Kiesen. The young man was rescued from the Aare as part of a search. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he died shortly after. Investigations were started on the course of the accident.
On Saturday 29 August 2020, shortly before 12:20 pm, the Bern Canton police were informed that an Aare surfer was in danger near the Jaberg Bridge in Kiesen and had disappeared in the Aare. According to initial findings, the man was surfing with someone else on the Aare when he suddenly asked for help. Despite immediate rescue measures by the companion, the man disappeared into the water.
Emergency services, immediately alerted and deployed, were able to locate the man during the search with the help of bystanders near Münsingen on the Aare and rescue him from the water. The man was immediately resuscitated and then taken to hospital in critical condition by an ambulance team, where he died shortly thereafter. The victim is an 18-year-old Swiss from the canton of Bern.
Several services of the cantonal police of Bern, a boat and an ambulance team of Bern Protection and Rescue and the Care Team of the canton of Bern were in action. The Bern Canton Police, under the direction of the Bern-Mittelland Public Prosecutor’s Office, have launched investigations to clarify the exact course of the accident and the circumstances.
