Martin Cater surprisingly wins the first season in the downhill in Val d’Isère. Urs Kryenbühl is third on the podium.

The podium

  • 1. Matin Cater (SLO) 2: 04.67
  • 2. Otmar Striedinger (AUT) + 0.22
  • 3. Urs Kryenbühl (SUI) + 0.27

The so-called podium riders were already immortalized in a photo when Martin Cater started the first season downhill in Val d’Isère. The Slovenian with starting number 41 walked away from his opponents in sensational fashion, clinching his first World Cup victory and preventing Otmar Striedinger’s premiere victory. Prior to that, 2 sixth places had been Caters’ best World Cup result.

Urs Kryenbühl showed a very strong performance on the Oreiller-Killy slope. The Schwyzer appeared more and more and took off, especially in the last leg of the competition. For Kryenbühl it is the second podium of his career. Already in Bormio almost a year ago I was second on the podium in descent.

Hintermann falls with the best time: Feuz has 6.

Niels Hintermann had a very bitter day. The Zürich drove outstandingly over and through the middle section and had a great time, but then lost his balance under compression and fell. Fortunately, Hintermann was not injured and it was just frustration at the missed opportunity.

Top seed Beat Feuz missed the podium for once, but Schangnauer once again proved his consistency with sixth place (+ 0.53). The 33-year-old has been in the top 6 in all World Cup downhill races for 3 years.

Mauro Caviezel, who celebrated his first World Cup victory in Super-G on Saturday, could not match the performance of the previous day and missed the top 10 in 16th place, 1.09 seconds behind.

The other swiss

  • 16. Ralph Weber + 1.09
  • 18. Carlo Janka + 1.10
  • 28. Marco Odermatt + 1.64
  • 34. Stefan ROGENT + 1.83

Gentle slope retention

Inspecting the route, fears arose that the track would no longer allow fast times after the top 20. However, this was not the case either. Drivers outside the top 30 also found fair conditions, which Cater impressively demonstrated.

So it goes

For sprinters, things will continue next weekend with a Super-G (Saturday) and a descent (Sunday) in Val Gardena. Then, too, we’ll keep you updated on SRF Sport.
