Pope Francis appointed Joseph Bonnemain, 72, the new bishop of the Diocese of Chur. Bonnemain has been the highest ecclesiastical judge in the Diocese of Chur for years.
The Pope had already included him in the list of three of those that the cathedral chapter should have elected the new bishop last November. But there was a scandal: the 22 canons did not exercise their right to vote.
Peter Bürcher remains until episcopal ordination
The diocese of Chur announced on Monday that the diocese’s apostolic administrator, Bishop Peter Bürcher, congratulated Joseph Bonnemain on his appointment and wished him God’s blessings on his future role. Bürcher continues to lead the diocese until the episcopal ordination and the appointment of the new pastor to the office of almost 700,000 Catholics.
With the appointment, the diocese of Chur finally has a pastor again, almost three years after Vitus Huonder’s resignation. Bonnemain is likely to become a transitional bishop. Because bishops usually have to offer the Pope their resignation at 75 years. (SDA / noo)
