Choupo-Moting lost the record by a hair, this is how the 5 newcomers from Bayern did it
Bayern Munich successfully started their title defense mission in the DFB Cup. Against the fifth division club 1. FC Düren, the Champions League winner won a lackluster but still sovereign 3-0 victory.
The cheeky outsider, quite cheeky and shot eight times at Bayern’s goal at the Allianz Arena, had only one goal before the game of the year: to be “better than Schalke and Barcelona”, as President Wolfgang Spelthahn had said earlier. Successfully: instead of eight goals, Düren conceded only three.
Fans certainly benefited from the fact that Bayern coach Hansi Flick gave many regular players a break and sent a B-Elf onto the field. Captain Manuel Neuer, forward Robert Lewandowski, head of defense David Alaba, none of them were on the team.
Bouna Sarr, Marc Roca, Douglas Costa and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and goalkeeper Alexander Nübel debuted with the record of German champions, and they did.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
The 31-year-old Cameroonian, who has already played for HSV, Nürnberg, Mainz and Schalke in the Bundesliga, lived up to expectations and did exactly what Bayern set him to do: the center forward was convincing as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski overall. Line.
Choupo-Moting showed his technical qualities and his goalscoring nose, but also great dedication. Time and time again he conquered balls in the center of the field. With his two goals of 1: 0 and 3: 0 and the resulting penalty before 2: 0, he was deservedly named “Man of the Match” after the game.
Choupo never managed to control Düren’s defense, he could have scored even more goals. But goalkeeper Jackmuth saved twice and once took revenge for the fact that technical aids are not allowed in the first round of the cup. The referee team denied the Cameroonian a hit even though the ball was well behind the line.
Choupo-Moting lost an internal club record: so far, no Bayern player has hit a debut triple. His teammates were still full of praise after the game: “He brings wit and fits well with our style of play because he is clean on the ball,” said Thomas Müller on “Sport1”.
Choupo-Moting:
“It was a wonderful evening. I am happy to be back in Germany, to wear the Bayern jersey and for my two goals. That was a good debut.”
Douglas Costa
The returnee, whom Uli Hoeness described as a characterless “mercenary” when he left Juventus for Turin in 2017, was one of the Bayern players’ assets on the wing. Time and time again Costa switched sides with 17-year-old super talent Jamal Musiala and looked for his way to goal. The 30-year-old Brazilian convinced with some notable individual actions and continued to show his speed and technical class.
Costa introduced the 1-0 with a deft pass to the depths. In the end, Juve’s loan made five passes per shot, no Bayern player served his teammates more. But the wingman couldn’t hide that he still has a training deficit. Flick saw it too: “Douglas is not yet 100 percent, but what he’s doing with the ball is promising,” praised the Bayern coach.

Bouna sarr
The 28-year-old right-back, who was hired as a substitute by Benjamin Pavard, played defense without errors and was able to put accents on offense over and over again. The Frenchman prepared the two goals from Choupo-Moting and otherwise showed a lot of pull towards the goal. Only its flanks still have room for improvement. “Bouna Sarr is a different winger, he showed good approaches today,” Flick said after the game.

Marc Roca
The 23-year-old Spaniard, who came to Bayern from Espanyol Barcelona for 9 million euros, played in the double six alongside his compatriot Javi Martínez in the absence of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. With two long-range shots, he narrowly missed the target, otherwise he didn’t attract much attention.
But even if Roca made less of an impression than Choupo-Moting, Costa and Sarr, he tried to pull the strings in midfield and set the pace for Bayern’s development. Roca is definitely not a second Thiago yet. “Marc takes a little longer to get into the right position. It has yet to find its way into the way we play, ”says Flick.
Alexander Nübel
The new substitute lived a quiet night despite eight shots on goal. The 24-year-old ex-Schalke hardly had anything to do, but was there when they needed him. After just 22 seconds, he defused a header, after which he played Neuers-style when the ball was with him.
