The police were already in position on Saturday afternoon at 1.30 pm at the Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich. Critics of the federal government’s Covid measures wanted to gather there at 2 p.m. for an unauthorized rally. Agents used loudspeakers to warn activists that a demonstration in the square would not be tolerated.

The police searched 40 people and turned them away. According to a police report on Saturday afternoon, four men were temporarily transferred to a police station. A vehicle with a sound system and speakers in the trunk was also temporarily seized. Otherwise, the action was peaceful, the protesters have withdrawn.

A relatively small group of activists clashed with the large police force. According to the police spokesman, Marco Cortesi, there were around 200 people. Among them were, in addition to those who wanted to protest against the federal regulation Covid-19, opponents of vaccination. Some of them carried flags with them. The police warned those present to head to Helvetiaplatz, where an approved rally for 5pm has been announced.

Organizers of the officially approved rally in District 4 expect up to 500 people to gather in the evening. Police want to closely monitor the situation, as a spokesperson says. “If the rally is held without a mask and applicable corona protection measures are violated, the on-site operations manager will decide whether the event should be closed.”
