The American citizen Pollard was surprisingly allowed to leave the United States. He had spent 30 years in prison for spying on Israel.

Former spy Jonathan Pollard and his wife Esther were personally received by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu greeted Pollard with the words: “You are home” and handed him an Israeli identity card.

Pollard, an American Jew, had sold military secrets to Israel in the 1980s while working as a civilian marine analyst. He was arrested in 1985 after a failed attempt to obtain asylum at the Israeli embassy in Washington. He then served a 30-year prison sentence in the United States. He was only released in 2015 under strict conditions. However, he was still considered a security risk and was not allowed to leave the United States for five years.

A few weeks ago the ban on leaving the country was not extended, allowing Pollard to emigrate to Israel. The Pollard spy affair has strained relations between the United States and Israel for years. However, Pollard is celebrated as a hero in Israel. Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin also greeted him with a tweet.
