About three decades after the murder of an American out of homosexual hatred, Australian police arrested a suspect. As police announced Tuesday, he is a 49-year-old man from Sydney.
He was arrested as part of decades of investigations into a mysterious 1988 murder of Scott Johnson, then a 27-year-old mathematician from the United States, who lived in Sydney. Johnson’s body had been found on a cliff near a favorite gay spot northeast of Sydney Harbor.
An investigation of the body had been ordered three times in the course of the investigation, which is unusual. At first, suicide was mentioned as the cause of death. But the latest investigation into his body has shown that the victim fell from the cliff as a result of violence used or threatened by strangers who attacked him out of hatred for homosexuals.
