Can the suitability of character be tested?
That is why on Wednesday the request was presented to the judicial commission to break the process and re-advertise the position. This request was rejected by just one vote difference, multiple sources confirm to SRF.
The two candidates must face an evaluation and then a second hearing before the commission. But there are great concerns about whether an evaluation can really test character aptitude.
“We are open-minded”
The Commission itself does not write anything about these internal disputes, it limits itself to declaring in the communiqué that it will decide in two weeks whether to present a proposal to Parliament for the elections.
Commission President Andrea Caroni only says: “So now we are happily awaiting the results of this evaluation and then the two hearings and then we decide whether to nominate someone from the existing candidates or keep looking. So we have an open mind about the importance of the office. “
Cancellation of the procedure is entirely possible
It is therefore possible that the Commission will interrupt the procedure in two weeks and start again, which means that the parliamentary elections should be postponed until spring.
However, if the judicial commission decides in Jornot’s favor, you will have to ask yourself whether it is politically sound after the Lauber affair to appoint someone who is already highly controversial within the commission.
