(ela./dpa) For some time now, the political situation in the eastern Mediterranean has heated up enormously. But also in terms of weather, temperatures in Cyprus rise to unusual values: for days, people have been groaning under high temperatures of more than 40 degrees. On Thursday, meteorologists again urgently warned against unnecessary movement and work outdoors. This applies particularly to the elderly and children. Thursday should be 43 degrees, on Friday even 46 degrees are expected. This is what the head of the Meteorological Office of the Mediterranean island of Kleanthis Nikolaidis told the Cypriot television station “Alpha”. The 46 degrees would mean a record since measurements began in Cyprus, he said. Even at about 2,000 meters above sea level, that is, in the mountainous regions of the Troodos mountain range, the thermometer should show 36 degrees on Thursday.

The heat wave started on Monday. A gradual drop in temperature to values of around 36 degrees is expected from next Sunday. Doctors advised people to wear loose-fitting light-colored cotton clothing, drink plenty of water, and avoid drinking alcohol or sugary drinks.
